Frequently Asked Questions
(much of this is covered in the Policies of AMRI section)
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing, such as workout clothes or pajamas, should be worn. "Magnet time" is often scheduled at night, allowing patients to sleep through their treatment sessions.
How long does it take?
Daily MME treatment sessions involve 4 to 12 hours of magnet time, depending on the particular health problem and your preferences. A MME treatment program generally lasts for 1 to 4 weeks, depending on the number of magnet hours required and the treatment schedule prescribed.
Is MME covered by my insurance?
No, insurance does not cover investigational devices and therapies. MME treatment is considered to be experimental by the FDA. Please review our Financial Policy.
How much will it cost?
MME is billed at $35 per hour.
Is the effect temporary or permanent?
In most cases, the effect is permanent. Improvement may continue over the first post-MME month, depending on the health problem under treatment. Patients often return for additional sessions to obtain additional benefits (a patient with spinal cord injury may wish to receive 600 hours of MME in three 200 our increments). as their schedule allows.
Can MME prevent future problems?
The answer to this important question is at present a theoretical one (in the future we will have facts, as we follow MME patients over time). If an organ system is dysfunctional due to accumulation of a toxin (such as Mercury in cardiomyopathy or Lead in kidney disease), then clearance of the toxin with MME would be expected to attenuate the disease process that damaged the organ in the first place, reducing the risk of future problems in that organ system. On the other hand, we cannot expect MME carried out at one point to prevent future damage or future problems if exposure to the toxin continues (if your diabetic neuropathy symptoms improve with MME but your sugar values remain out of control, we can't expect MME to prevent further sugar-related damage to your nerves and a recurrence of your neuropathy symptoms). Of course, we can, we should, and we will work with you to deal with the factors that caused the disease state under treatment to develop in the first place.
Is Nursing Care Provided?
No - not for ongoing nursing or special care. During office hours, the entire Comprehensive Heart Care and EECP Center staff will be present at our facility. After hours and on weekends, an AMRI technologist will be present, but he/she will be supervising MME on four patients. If the MME patient is a small child or an adult in need of constant attention, then it will be necessary for a family member or attendant to be present.
Does MME hurt?
No - MME doesn't hurt. Most patients experience nothing during MME. Some feel a "warmness" or "tingling" over the body region being treated. Muscle aching related to reclining in a given position may occur. This can be addressed with pillows and padding, by taking short rest breaks to stretch, or by periodic position changes, still trying to keep you in or within 90° of your sleep position.
Why is sleep position so important?
The idea behind MME is to increase the velocity of electron spin in the atoms that make up the organ being treated. The direction of electron spin is taken from the atom's orientation within the Earth's magnetic field, when the cell containing it is "born", which typically occurs between Midnight and 2 AM, when growth hormone (in adults think of growth hormone as cell division hormone) levels peak. The Earth's magnetic field is emitted at the poles and then rains down upon us. Thus if you sleep on your back, we want to treat you on your back. If need be, we can also treat you on one side (being off by £ 90° does not significantly attenuate the MME treatment effect), but never on your stomach (as then we would be slowing down the rate of electron spin). We understand that some of you role all over the place when you sleep and do not have a dominant sleep position, but we try our best to match your MME position to your dominant sleep position.
Where will I stay while I am receiving MME in Toledo?
There are two hotels (a Clarion and a Comfort Inn) within a 5 minute drive of our facility. Motels designed for longer stays are fifteen minutes away by expressway.
Can family members and friends stay with me overnight or visit me during the day?
Absolutely - recliner chairs are in every room and our facility is equipped with showers and a kitchen. Friends may visit during the day. To ensure safety (individuals with pacemakers or cochlear ear implants must not enter the magnetic environment) family and visitors are required to complete a screening questionnaire.
AMRI of NW Ohio provides MME treatment under the guidelines of an Investigational Review Board, consistent with FDA regulations.
Please note that MME treatment is considered to be experimental by the FDA. Although many patients have improved, no guarantee of success is implied.
